ON THE COVER:
Recently, a 900-square-foot area in what formerly had been a retail space within a historic building in Oakland, CA, was transformed to be the second location for Modern Coffee. A distinct feature of the coffee shop's design is the flooring, comprising black-and-white patterned 8- x 8-inch tiles from Granada Tile's Echo collection in the deco, Cluny. Further adding interest to the space is the accent wall behind the counter, featuring white glossy subway tiles from Dal-Tile, with the word "coffee" inscribed on top in bright red lettering.
