Custom tile brings dimension and whimsy to the interior of D'Espresso, an espresso bar located in New York City. Inspired by the neighboring Bryant Public Library, the imagery is created by a pattern of 18 different 16- x 16-inch tiles that repeat 36 times across the surface. The custom tiles run along the floor, up the 15-foot wall and across the ceiling. This project is one of several featured in a focus on Interiors in this issue of Contemporary Stone & Tile Design. We've had several calls and emails over the last two months regarding the use of solvents to remove old adhesive, particularly the black asphaltic cut back type, used for old vinyl asbestos tiles. These tiles are present in many older buildings, many of them schools. When asbestos abatement initiatives are undertaken in these buildings, one of the materials removed and abated are the vinyl asbestos tiles and the cut back adhesive used to install them.

Seattle’s Broadway Building, by developer Hunters Capital, has 94 market-rate rental apartments with 28 units set aside for international students attending Seattle Central Community College. Both market-rate and student apartments are 100% occupied. All but one of the retail spaces are leased.
