ON THE COVER:
For the recent renovation of a master bath in a townhouse on the Eastside of Manhattan, a unique custom-fabricated floating structure creates a focal point in the space. The built-in vanity top and backsplash of the floating sinks feature White Thassos marble, which was also employed in 12- x 24-inch format in the tub and shower area. Further adding interest in the room is a mosaic sunburst floor pattern. Design by Charles Rabinovitch Architects, Riverdale, NY. Story begins on page 20.

“The Point” is the Chancellor’s Residence at N.C. State University in Raleigh, N.C., and was recognized as Room of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders. The main architect was Marvin Malecha, Dean of the N.C. State College of Design; the principal builder was Jon Rufty, of Rufty Homes; the interior designer was Judy Pickett, FASID, principal of Design Lines; and it features Absolute Black Granite fabricated and installed by ROCKin’teriors. Our latest annual report on costs and resale values nationwide–and the resulting "bang for the buck"– involving 20 major remodeling projects is our most detailed ever. Our findings: Costs went up for all 20 projects while values rose for only about two-thirds of the jobs. Check out which projects scored the highest returns and which markets had the greatest number of projects whose value exceeded their cost.
